Mici Mici
Receiving on-going assistance through our Crisis Care Fund
Mici is a very sweet 3 year old grey tabby who has been diagnosed with severe chronic asthma. His caretaker, Gabriela, adopted Mici and his brother when they were just kittens. Mici unfortunately has not been responding well to traditional treatment options. To diagnose a possible infection that could be negatively affecting his response to current treatments required a tracheal wash and culture. Mici also had a painful growth on his back that needed to be removed and sent to a pathologist for evaluation. Gabriela is disabled, has limited financial means, and needed assistance. Cats in Crisis was happy to help Mici receive these procedures and we are hoping the results will help secure a better treatment plan for him. We will continue to bring you updates about how Mici is doing!

"Mici will be 3 years old Feb 3rd. He is not a small cat but comes across as small for 2 reasons: his legs are short, stubby little legs so he is close to the ground and he has the face of a kitten. His meow is a little tigery growl. He is so cute! He picks up his little toy mouse and trots through the house with it in his mouth letting out a series of little throaty meows until he gets to his destination, which is usually under the living room couch, to store the toy along with the other five! He also rolls on his back and presents his tummy for scratching just like a dog! Of course this is all when he is feeling well. When he has asthma its pretty bad. He puffs and puffs, his sides look like an accordian, until the Breathine kicks in. He'll hide under the couch with his toy mice, stretched out on his side to get air and when his breathing finally regulates, he falls asleep from exhaustion. When he wakes up he heads straight for the bowl of fresh water I have waiting for him. He'll try to play, but that just makes him cough, so during these times he just hangs out watching his brother Lillo play.

I really hope that we find something treatable so we can stabilize Mici. He is so young and beautiful. I need him in my life. He makes my life better."

February 23, 2005 - Update on Mici

Cats In Crisis was contacted by two wonderful donors this week who together have assisted us in providing ongoing financial sponsorships to ensure Mici will receive his monthly Flovent medication. Through the generosity of a two-month donor and a lifetime sponsor, Mici has been successfully sponsored for life and is our First Success Story!

Some words from Mici's guardian...

"I am so thankful for your generosity! The past few months have been so difficult and then I found Cats In Crisis. Together we have gotten my little Mici boy through two procedures and onto the Flovent inhaler. Now, with your generous sponsorship of Mici, I can breathe a sigh of relief! I am so happy right now. This is one of the best things that has happened to me since I got sick. Knowing that I can afford to take care of my little Mici boy is one of the most important things in my life. I am really grateful for everyone's help with this! I will be able to afford to keep him with me always! I just wanted to let you know that Mici is doing quite well. He is down to one 5mg Prednisone pill per day along with his Flovent inhaler. This is good news...before the tracheal wash procedure that CIC helped me pay for, Mici wasn't responding to 10mg of Prednisone per day! He was back and forth to the hospital every 6 or 7 days in crisis!

The tracheal wash has turned up some bacteria in his airway, which is not uncommon, but his white blood cell count is elevated indicating infection. Our vet has prescribed him some antibiotics that should improve his condition and get him off of the Prednisone completely.

I will be so happy when he is only on the Flovent. Being off of the Prednisone will save him from future steroid complications such as diabetes.

Thank you from the deepest part of my heart."

Gabriela and Mici

Thank you to our generous donors who have made this case successful! We will continue to bring you updates about Mici in the future.

05/28/2005: Mici continues to do well on the Flovent inhaler for his asthma. He continues to breath much easier than he used to and is very playful. He and his brother Lilo are doing very well!
