Sweet Pea, a lovely, black 15-year- old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism over a year ago. It was recommended by two veterinarians that she receive Radio-iodine treatment to cure her hyperthyroidism, rather than be on daily medication for the rest of her life. I-131 therapy is very expensive and requires extensive hospitalization and isolated therapy, but it is a remarkable treatment that cures the disease. The nearest hospital to Sweet Pea that performs this specialized procedure is Kansas State Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Through the help of a Stripes Fund Grant, Sweet Pea was able to be evaluated for this therapy. She was approved as a successful candidate and has now completed her radiation therapy. She is now at home recovering with her devoted caregiver, Paul. What a success story!
